Girls interview at Bumpershoot

 09/06/08

hi folks! good news/bad news on the new Marked Men LP.

bad news: due to scheduling conflicts and manufacturing issues, we are pushing the Ghosts LP/CD back to early '09.

good news: to make up for the wait, we're gonna be rush-releasing a 7" to tide you over till then!

it'll feature one Jeff song (Fortune) from the upcoming album, and an exclusive Mark song (Like Robots) b-side.

we already have the tracks and art ready to go, so look for this just as fast as we can press it up!

09/06/08

Ergs RIP? yeah, it pains me to even type that, but it looks like the rumours were true. well, go see 'em while you can (they're playing shows thru November) and make sure to pick up the Hindsight Is 20/20, My Friend double LP or CD.

Speaking of which, we had to reject a test pressing on the LP. So the vinyl might be a little while yet. the CD WILL make it's 9/16 release date, though, so hold tight, we'll be making it available for mailorder real soon.

09/05/08

in case anyone was wondering that is happening with the Dirtnap (I'm not going to post a link - you're on it!) site:

we have disabled ordering in anticipation of launching a new site. this site is now strictly for informational purposes only, all ordering is to be done thru www.greennoiserecords.com

for those of you who didn't know, Green Noise Records is the retail store in SE Portland that Dirtnap is run out of. The Green Noise site features all the Dirtnap stuff you've cum to know and love, plus 7500 other titles as well. So, uh, order from there from now on!

08/28/08

holy crap! The Girls make Spin.com's Band Of The Day!

check out the article here

08/26/08

reviews are starting to come in for the The Girls Yes, No, Yes, No, Yes, No LP/CD, out 9/16. here's one:

American Teen, the new documentary film by Nanette Bernstein, explores the clique culture of contemporary American high schools. As the promotional poster for the film depicting the teens in a classic John Hughes inspired pose suggests, perhaps not much has changed from the early 1980s exploration of the same issue in The Breakfast Club. Hughes\' film, which begins with an epigraph from David Bowies "Changes," further pronounces the bond between music and identity in adolescence. In high school, music means everything; whether you are in band or listen to The Band.

For The Girls, the bond between music and identity is equally as important. The Seattle band expand punk signifiers and end up sounding as slick as they look. Punk is classified in terms of styles and trends that either progress or revive the genre, but just like with high school students, some bands are trendsetters, some followers, and others stray from the pack. In the punk rock class of '77, bands like Magazine, Wire, and The Stranglers explored punk\'s arty, outer edges. They refused to be defined, they dared to be different, and they probably showed up at school with paint on their clothes. Taking a page from the seminal fanzine Sniffin\' Glue, The Girls act as if 30 years of American punk rock never existed.

On their second album, Yes No Yes No Yes No, The Girls\' version of artpunk is synthetic, robotic and hypnotic, combining postpunk dance rhythms with pre-new wave electronic experimentation. Rather than look to hook heavy songs by The Cars, The Girls make for a much closer comparison to Tubeway Army. The album\'s first track, "Where Wolves Drink," begins forceful and driving; a sing-along chorus and beautifully fuzzy keys characterize this banger. "Transfer Station" alone is worth the price of admission, amping up Buzzcocks-style pop-punk perfection with Devo-like pyrotechnics. "Point of Departure," which ends the album, feels epic compared to the rest of the tracks even though it is only three minutes long. Its slow-burning intro is reminiscent of Gary Numan\'s \"Cars,\" but darker, more disturbing. The Girls keep slow and steady on this track, but not too steady. As the chorus fades out, singer Shannon Brown repeats the line, "I often drift when I drive."

The Girls stray from the punk rock pack where hard and fast rules. Their interest in avoiding popular punk trends is refreshing, but at times they occupy a difficult space between strange and familiar. Like their predecessors, Tubeway Army and The Stranglers, The Girls often ignore punk rock staples, preferring instead to explore moody organs, stiff beats, and danceable rhythms. Yes No Yes No Yes No is not the soundtrack to your revolution, but it would definitely be played at the after party. - LOST AT SEA.

Announcing our newest batch of suckers, err, I mean sign-ees!

The Estranged are a new band from right here in Portland.

Insanely great musicians with a long background in the HC/Crust scene (including Portland staples such as Hellshock, Warcry, Remains Of The Day, Absolute Rulers, and many many more) playing crushing, ominous post punk ala Wipers meets Mission Of Burma meets Warsaw/Joy Division. Very Pac NW if you know what I mean.

Look for the Sacred Decay/Through The Night 7 Inch on Green Noise Records in January, followed by an LP/CD on Dirtnap in the Spring. If you can't wait that long, check out their Myspace page!

Going in a very different direction for both the band members and this label, past and present members of The Observers and The Clorox Girls play acoustic (yes acoustic) PUNK, featuring a few radical re-workings of old Observers and Speds songs, plus tons of spine-chillingly great new material.

1/26/06

Damn, we haven't updated this in a long time.......let's see, what's going on......

The Ergs- Upstairs/Downstairs LP/CD is being mastered as we speak. Should be out in March.

Exploding Hearts - Guitar Romantic LP is being sent to the pressing plant this week. Ought to be out on Green Noise Records in early Jan.

Just got the final mixes of the High Tension Wires LP/CD, and it's gonna be a killer! Look for that a little later in the spring of 07.

Oh, and keep yer eyeballs glued to this site for an upcoming announcement of a for-now-top-secret Canadian addition to our already stellar roster!

we'll leave you with the inimitable Lord Rutledge's review of the Beat Beat Beat via Now Wave zine:

It's official - everybody loves Beat Beat Beat. You, me, your little brother, my graybeard uncle, your underaged girlfriend, '77 nostalgists, pop-punk kids, garage scenesters, mosh pit warriors, degenerate punk rockers, record collector geeks, Killed By Death enthusiasts, militia men, disco dancers, gay Republicans, gaming nerds, racist comedians, and four out of five dentists all agree that Living In the Future is one of the year's best albums. Blurring the distinctions between melodic hardcore, powerpop, and '77 punk, Beat Beat Beat's speedy, tuneful attack is certain to go over grandly with every last sector of the Now Wave readership. Many amongst the Now Wave family have been keen on this Atlanta group for a couple years now, and I imagine many more will be jumping aboard the bandwagon shortly. Hotly anticipated ever since the band's Douchemaster single hit the streets early last year, the full-length debut Living In the Future does not disappoint in the least. This was a release so big that it took two of my favorite record labels to get it out into the world!

While just about every person who reads this webzine is a fan of the melodic side of punk, a great number of you have grown weary of the highly-derivative, retro-leaning acts that tend to make that kind of music. Beat Beat Beat, thankfully, engage in neither blatant imitation nor substandard hero worship. One might hear echoes of past (Adolescents, early Replacements, numerous KBD favorites) and recent (Exploding Hearts, Marked Men, Stitches) punk greats in the band's music, but you can't really say that Beat Beat Beat sounds like any of those bands. The group plays some of the freshest, most distinct sounding punk music you'll hear anywhere. The album title is kind of appropriate, because this is as modern and "current" sounding as classic punk gets. So even if these fellows aren't exactly living in the future, at least they aren't stuck in the past. And great songs like "Don't Tell Me Now", "Nasty Nightmare", "Leave Me Out", and "Savage Girl" are as catchy and tuneful as anything being churned out by far less original "pop" specialists.

From wire to wire, Living In the Future flat-out rips. The playing is tight, fast, and fiery. The songs are efficient, satisfying, and not at all formulaic. The singing is urgent, strong, and just as on-key as it needs to be. In a day and age when hype is king and very little turns out nearly as great as it's supposed to, it's a true delight to hear Beat Beat Beat exceed all expectations. What an album!

Check out what MRR has to say about the River City Tanlines LP:

River City Tanlines - I'm Your Negative LP

Probably my fave Alicja Trout side-band (or is it a side band now?). If you
came expecting the cold-wave synth of the LOST SOUNDS, you got the wrong
band. What makes this one different from the other femme fronted garage
rockers is the pedigree of the members who have done stints with RL BURNSIDE
and LOVE among others. While their sound is rooted in punk rock traditions
like a stripped down garage AVENGERS, they have a bunch of 60's pop and even
70's rock (think JOAN JETT) sensibilities. The songwriting is masterful,
playing tight as fuck, and recording near perfect. I've been hard pressed to
find fault with this label, and this release ups the ante. I could see this
band blowing up WHITE STRIPES-style - keep 'em peeled. (TB)

07/26/06

Big big news: It's been in the works for what seems like forever now, but starting on Halloween, we'll be releasing more EXPLODING HEARTS material.

10/31 will see the long awaited reissue of Guitar Romantic on vinyl, as well as a 16 song CD called Shattered, which will compile the bands singles, demos, alt takes from the Guitar Romantic sessions, and unreleased material.

Meant as a tribute to the band and their music (Guitar Romantic is one of our favorite punk rock records of all time, and we're not just sayin' that cause we put it out on CD), the CD will come with a 20 page full color booklet filled with unseen photos from the personal archive of band photographer Chrystaei Branchaw, incredible, extensive, liner notes from Fred "The Barber" Landeen of Vinyl Warning Records fame, and will be enhanced with a 5 song video from their show at Bottom Of The Hill in San Francisco, CA 07/17/03. (their last official show.)

A little bit later on we will be releasing a two song 7" featuring unreleased tracks that are appearing on the Shattered CD. Look for that towards the end of the year.

Here's the Shattered cover art

Here's the first Mp3 from the album, Teenage Faces, which was originally released as the A-Side of a long out of print 7" on Vinyl Warning Records: Mp3

Announcing the 2nd release on Dirtnap's awesome new sub-label, Green Noise Records:

Late summer will see the release of the 2nd single from The Nice Boys. The Nice Boys, as you surely already know, features members of the Exploding Hearts and Riffs. They'll have an album out on Birdman around the same time.

05/12/06

Open the floodgates! New releases on Dirtnap are now available!

Take It, Somebody, the 4th (and if we may be so immodest, best) CD from Milwaukee, WI's (yay, the first Dirtnap band from our home state of WI) Modern Machines is available NOW

The Epoxies - Synthesized CDEP is also up on the website. This EP compiles the 2 long out of print Dirtnap 7"s, and has been available at Epoxies shows for awhile, but since so many people ask us about the availability of those old 7"s, we've decided to give this a wider release.

both bands are on tour as we speak, check the SHOWS page for the all-important details.

04/21/06

Big news here at Dirtnap! We are excited as hell to announce the launch of our vinyl-only sub-label, Green Noise Records! In some ways this feels like starting over, as Green Noise is gonna be a 7" only label that will focus on (but not be limited to) local NW stuff, much like Dirtnap was at the beginning. Our first release will be a single from Portland's Absolute Rulers, due out this summer! Absolute Rulers (3/4ths of whose members are still in high school) feature two members of the Diskords, the drummer of Autistic Youth, and none other than Fred The Barber (of Vinyl Warning Records fame) on vocals! Think dark, melodic, anti-social punk/hc for fans of The Observers, No Hope For The Kids, etc etc.

Many, many, other projects are in the works, but we can't tell you about them just yet!

04/06/06

As promised, here's the first (uh, actually only) preview of our next release, the 3rd album (first on Dirtnap) from Milwaukee's fabulous Modern Machines! Visit our MP3 page to check it out!

04/01/06

Check out our shows page for up-to-the-second tour dates for Modern Machines, Black Sunday, River City Tanlines, Epoxies, and more.

In the next day or two, we'll have the first Mp3 from The Modern Machines upcoming CD, Take It, Somebody. Stay tuned!

03/13/06

annoucing our next two releases, both of which will be out May 30th:

Milwaukee, WI's have recently completed recording their debut (and 3rd album overall) CD for Dirtnap, entitled Take It, Somebody. We just got it back from the mastering plant, and it turned out better than we ever coulda hoped! look for an Mp3 in the next week or so.

also, Dirtnap alumni The Epoxies are returning to their roots to release the Synthesized EP. long-time fans might recognize this as the homemade CD they've been peddling at shows the last year or two, we've decided to pick it up and give it a proper release. This is a 5 song EP which compiles both of The Epoxies loooooong out of print Dirtnap 7"s, both of which sell for not-inconsiderable sums on eBay.

02/20/06

Soviettes and New Town Animals 7"s back in stock!

This will be the last small (100) pressing of the Soviettes 7", then it's outta print 4-ever!

Also, ZZZ-19, The New Town Animals - Fashion Fallout 7" has been out of print for years, but we found a box of them while moving recently. So we're selling them here for normal price, get a copy before it goes out of print again!

The ever-elusive High Tension Wires are (gasp!) playing some shows in Texas in late Jan/early Feb! 12/27/05

introducing the two newest additions to the Dirtnap slave-labor-mill, er, I mean "family":

Atlanta '77 miscreants Beat Beat Beat are recording their debut CD for Dirtnap right now! (I think!) Look for a release in late March/early April. Should have an Mp3 up pretty quick, check back cause it's gonna rock for sure!

The Returnables from Chicago, IL recently suffered the loss of singer/guitarist John Glick in a really messed up car accident/vehicular homicide. John (and his wife Becky of the equally cool Dials) are old friends, plus we were big fans of the band, so we are going to release the last 4 songs they recorded (as well as 3 live cuts) as a benefit EP. Really great geeky punk/power pop/garage kinda stuff. (John used to play in an Undertones cover band called The Underclones, if that tells ya anything!) These guys weren't around long enough...............................

12/24/05

Black Sunday are now officially a "real" band (the fabulous Tronic Blanc LP is a collection of recordings mostly played by Alicja)and are playing some SHOWS!!!! Full tour coming in April!

11/28/05

this just in: our next full length will be from Montreal's Mind Controls! Mind Controls features Mark Sultan of BBQ, Spaceshits, Les Sexareenos, King Khan BBQ etc fame, plus members of Demon's Claws, The Confusers, and more.

LP/CD in stores February (although we'll have a website-only color vinyl version available sometime in January), European tour in late winter '05. (along with a limited-to-500-pic-disc-LP European-only edition on P Trash)

Here's an MP3 to get ya in the mood.

10/19/05

New tour dates added for The Spits, River City Tanlines, Charming Snakes, and more. check here for details.

well, the Dirtnap News Page is back, to replace the Dirtnap Message Board. Kinda funny, since the Dirtnap Message Board is what replaced the Dirtnap News Page a couple of years ago, but whatever. We were having lots of problems with it, and not many people were posting due to technical and spam issues, so we said fuck it for now. Maybe one of these decades we'll bring it back.
